Area residents earn medical degrees

Five area residents were among the students who received doctor of osteopathi­c medicine (D.O.) degrees from Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathi­c Medicine at the college’s May 12 commenceme­nt exercises.

•Kevin A. DeGroot of Concord Township, is the child of Steven and Deborah DeGroot of Concord Township. In 2013 Dr. DeGroot earned a B.A. in biology from The College of Wooster, and is a 2009 graduate of Riverside High School in Painesvill­e Township. After graduation, Dr. DeGroot will begin a residency in family medicine at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, Maine.

William J. Hein of Mentor, earned a B.S. in education from Ohio University in 2010, and is a 2006 graduate of Mentor High School. After graduation, Dr. Hein will begin a residency in family medicine at University Hospitals Richmond Medical Center in Richmond Heights.

• Branden J. King of Mentor, is the child of Mark and Anna King of Mentor, and of Joel and Rose DeBoe of Mentor. In 2011 Dr. King earned a B.S. in physics from the University of Dayton, and is a 2006 graduate of Lake Catholic High School in Mentor. After graduation, Dr. King will begin a residency in physical medicine and rehabilita­tion with the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, and an internship at The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati.

• Crystal A. Piras of Chardon, is the child of James C. Piras Sr. and Claudette Shrock Piras of Chardon. In 2012 Dr. Piras earned a B.A. in biochemist­ry from Kenyon College, and is a 2008 graduate of Chardon High School. After graduation, Dr. Piras will begin a residency in family medicine at UPMC Susquehann­a Williamspo­rt Regional Medical Center in Williamspo­rt, Pa.

• Kelsey M. Quinn of Auburn, is the child of Matthew and Nancy Lyon of Auburn. In 2012 Dr. Quinn earned a B.S. in kinesiolog­y and health from Miami University, and is a 2008 graduate of Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School Munson Township. After graduation, Dr. Quinn will begin a residency in pediatrics at Wake Forest Brenner Children’s Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The 2018 graduating class was the 39th to graduate from the Heritage College.

Mentor resident earns dean’s honors

Nazareth College announced that Elyse Began of Mentor has been named to the dean’s list for the Spring 2018 semester.

Began is majoring in Music Therapy.

A student’s grade point average must be at least 3.5 or above, and they must complete 12 credit hours of graded work that semester in order to be included on the dean’s list at Nazareth.
