Leadership Lake County groups seek proposals for community projects

- Staff report

Leadership Lake County is encouraging organizations to submit proposals for community projects to be completed by Leadership Lake County Alumni, the Signature Class of 2019 or Junior Leadership programs.

Three project options are available for interested organizations to apply for and the selected projects will be completed in 2018 and early 2019, according to a news release. Lake County nonprofit, charitable or human services, including senior organizations, are encouraged to apply.

“During the 32-year history of Leadership Lake County, these civic impact projects have helped our local nonprofits gain stability, implement new services, and thrive to make Lake County,” Leadership Lake County CEO Jessie Baginski said in the release.

“Our graduates go on to serve on nonprofit boards and in public offices in our community, armed with a thorough understanding of our community assets and needs,” Baginski said. “We have played instrumental roles in the restoration of Mooreland Mansion, provided operational guidance for Lifeline and Project Hope for the Homeless, and completed physical plant projects for the History Center and McKinley Grove to name only a few.”

• The Leadership Lake County Alumni Day of Service Project will be completed by Leadership Lake County alumni on Sept. 15.

Interested organizations may submit a proposal for a one-day Leadership Alumni Day of Service project to benefit a Lake County nonprofit organization. The deadline to apply for consideration is July 31.

• The Community Impact Project is an integral part of Leadership Lake County’s Signature Program. Each year, the new class reviews proposals and adopts four to six projects with a team of six to eight class members working in collaboration with an agency to complete a selected project.

Organizations may submit a proposal by the July 31 deadline for consideration of a Community Impact Project to occur between October and May. A project may be completed prior to May, but cannot extend beyond that time frame.

The Signature Class of 2019 will narrow down the projects for selection during the first week of September. Projects selected in the finalist group will be invited to join the class on Sept. 27 at Punderson Manor Resort and Conference Center in Newbury Township to further discuss the project expectations and to initiate the project.

• This Junior Leadership Class of 2019 will adopt a Community Impact Project at an opening retreat on Aug. 12 and begin planning action steps and timelines on Aug. 13. Junior Leadership students work on the project during each program day and complete the project on March 30, 2019, on Global Youth Service Day.

This year, the Junior Leadership Class project spruced up the McKinley Community Outreach Center in Willoughby and final completion of the project coincided with national Global Youth Service Day. The project included upgrades to the McKinley Center’s Court, School/GED Room and Donation Room, and gave patrons of the center an opportunity to have pet kits for new homes.

Interested organizations may submit a 2019 project proposal for the Junior Leadership Class by the July 20 deadline. The selected organization must have a representative attend a meeting to present the project on Aug. 12 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Lake County YMCA Outdoor Family Center in Perry Township.
