Q: Why do I get Sulfur Burps and How Can I Prevent Them? A: Have you ever burped and experienced a rotten egg-like odor? These are commonly known as sulfur burps, and they can be unpleasant and embarrassing. Fortunately, they are not associated with a serious medical condition. The rotten egg smell associated with sulfur burps comes from hydrogen sulfide gas. When bacteria in the mouth and the digestive system break down food, new chemical compounds form. Hydrogen sulfide is one of the byproducts of digestion. While some hydrogen sulfide production is normal, excessive production can result in a sulfuric belch, which has many potential causes. Sulfur burps can be caused by stress, gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and even infections. Certain foods or beverages can also cause sulfur burps such as broccoli, Brussel’s sprouts, cauliflower, garlic, dairy products, and beer. The best way to prevent sulfur burps is to find out what is causing them. Keeping a journal of your foods and daily habits can be very helpful. Has your diet changed recently? If you suspect that a certain food is responsible, then try eliminating it from your diet. Potential dietary culprits include carbonated beverages, sugary food & drink, alcohol and large meals.
If you still cannot isolate the underlying cause of your sulfur burps, I invite you to contact my office. Together, we can investigate if a gastrointestinal condition is responsible. For your convenience, you may request an appointment on our website www.cdhohio.com.
