MENTAL HEALTH AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE CARE

- Rakesh Ranjan, MD Charak Center For Health and Wellness

With the recent and tragic suicides of Anthony Bourdain and Kate Spade, depression and suicide have taken center stage in public discourse. Recently, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has reported suicide rates in the U.S. have risen nearly 30 percent recently since 1999. In the public eye, both Bourdain and Spade seemed to live great professional lives. Unfortunately, this was not the case in their private lives. Kate Spade apparently had a fairly long history of depression and anxiety. Anthony Bourdain, admittedly, struggled with drug addiction.

In the days following the deaths of the two celebrities, there has been a 25% increase in calls to The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. According to the Director of Communication for the Lifeline, Frances Gonzalez, this recent increase occurred because the hotline number has been shared widely by news organizations, and on social media. This reaffirms that depression remains a widespread condition, and needs to be continuously and openly discussed, without any stigma and prejudice.

In order to prevent suicide it is important to be aware of the warning signs. Some people who are contemplating suicide have previously attempted it in the past. Another warning sign is increase of drug and alcohol usage. People dealing with suicidal thoughts try to escape their reality, and using substances can be a way for them to cope. Someone who has suicidal thoughts also might withdraw from social contact. They no longer want to hang with friends or family, and always seem to be alone. Feelings of hopelessness is another warning sign of suicide. Sometimes people who are suffering from suicidal thoughts may feel like they are useless or worthless. Also, please be sure to watch for changes in eating or sleeping patterns.

If you notice any of these warning signs in your loved one or friend’s behavior, it is best to have a frank conversation about them. I also would definitely recommend that professional help is sought without delay.
