only to have it tip off the end of his glove and roll directly toward Perez. From deep in the hole, Perez made a strong throw to first that Medina stretched to receive, retiring Cuadrado by an eyelash.

“It was just an awesome game, the kind of game we live for” Jones said, smiling. “Our guys were pitching great and we were feeding off that.”

Great Lakes starter and eventual loser Alfredo Tavarez (1-4, 2.94 ERA) had some control issues, walking five in 5 2/3 innings. But he keep battling through trouble until the bottom of the fifth, when it appeared he had Lake County’s Will Benson dead to rights as Benson tried to steal third base.

However, the attempted pickoff throw sailed past Great Lakes third baseman Brock Carpenter, allowing Benson to race home with what proved to be the game’s only tally.

The Captains upped their record to 17-18 in the second half of the Midwest League season. They find themselves in the thick of a fiveteam race for two secondhalf playoff spots up for grabs in the Eastern Division.

“It means a lot to me and it’s a really big deal for the players,” Carlin said.
