The final score told one story Sept. 7 at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium.

Mentor coach Steve Trivisonno told another after his Cardinals beat Glenville, 42-18.

Trivisonno was pleased to have Mentor improve to 3-0 but displeased with his team’s sloppy ball security. The Cardinals lost two fumbles, had a pass intercepted and a punt blocked. Two of Glenville’s three touchdowns followed

Mentor turnovers.

“We were sloppy tonight. This is unacceptable,” said Trivisonno.

“I was concerned this might happen after the last two games,” Trivisonno added, referring to season-opening wins over area Division I powerhouses St. Edward and St. Ignatius.

Paced by their sturdy defense and the duo of sophomore quarterback Ian Kipp and junior running back Brian Trobel on offense, the Cardinals were sharp enough through most of the first half.

Mentor got rolling with just over five minutes remaining in the first quarter on a 9-yard TD run by Trobel. The PAT by Conor McIntosh made it 7-0.

Kipp’s 17-yard TD pass and the PAT upped the count to 140. Trobel cashed in an 18-yard TD run on the following Mentor possession as the Cardinals took a 21-0 lead.

Senior linebacker Daniel Adams of Mentor picked off a pass by Glenville junior quarterback William Anglen early in the second quarter. Five plays later, Kipp raced in to the end zone from 2 yards out on

a keeper. The PAT made it 28-0.

Then came the first of the Mentor miscues as Glenville recovered on a punt return with just over two minutes remaining in the first half. Junior running back Torrance Davis run up the middle from 3 yards out for the TD.

Mentor showed resilience after surrendering

that score.

Starting from their own 34-yard line with 46 seconds remaining in the half, the Cardinals covered those 66 yards in eight plays. the last of those plays was a 3-yard TD run by Trobel that propelled Mentor to a 35-6 lead at halftime.

Trobel finished the first half with 110 yards and three touchdowns on 12

carries.

“There was a lot of open space thanks to the offensive line and some good calls by the coaches,” said Trobel.

Early in the third quarter, Trobel’s 26-yard TD run followed Mentor senior defensive back DJ Wolf’s interception.

The Cardinals lost their edge after that. A fumble

and the blocked punt set the stage for Glenville touchdowns that while incidental to the outcome were dealbreakers for Trivisonno.

“We got content and went through the motions,” Trivisonno said, shaking his head. “We need to play better. We need to practice better.”

Mentor next hosts Strongsville on Sept. 14.
