- Staff report

“You will see in his resume a strong work ethic and commitment to community involvement. John is dedicated to our country, our state and our party, and will be a great asset to the State Central Committee.”

— Lake County Republican Chair Dale H. Fellows

The Ohio Republican State Central Committee voted on Sept. 7 to appoint Willoughby resident John Popelka to fill the State Central Committeeman seat in the 25th District.

The district covers portions of Lake and Cuyahoga counties.

“The vacancy was created by the untimely and sad passing of our close friend and colleague, Bob Murphy,” said Lake County Republican Chair Dale H. Fellows in a news release. “Bob was a wonderful person . ... ‘Larger than Life’ many people would say. He was passionate and dedicated to his wife Lauren, his family, his country, his God, and to the Republican Party. We are thrilled that the Central Committee chose John Popelka to fill Bob’s position. Bob’s wife, Lauren, and I both agree that Bob would be very pleased with the selection of John Popelka to the position he held.”

In the recommendation letter sent to Ohio Republican Party Chair Jane Timken and the members of the State Central Committee, Fellows said: “John has been a great County GOP Central Committee member for many years and is a very active member of our Executive Committee. He created and chairs out annual James A. Garfield picnic at the former president’s home. This event has become one of the highlights of our political calendar. You will see in his resume a strong work ethic and commitment to community involvement. John is dedicated to our country, our state and our party, and will be a great asset to the State Central Committee.”
