DIGESTIVE HEALTH

- Michael Kirsch, MD, FACP

Q: Disruptions in Sleep? Acid Reflux, GERD can Cause Sleep Apnea A: Acid reflux can cause more than just heartburn. It could be contributing to sleep disturbances including obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a dangerous health condition. Acid reflux occurs when the valve between the esophagus and stomach fails to close properly. When the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) at the bottom of the esophagus remains open, gastric acid and digestive juices can flow back into the esophagus, causing chest pain, throat burning and a sour taste in your mouth. If you experience these symptoms more than twice per week, you may have a chronic condition called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). According to the American Association for Sleep Apnea, there is a correlation between GERD and OSA, a sleep disorder that occurs when the muscles of your throat relax and block your airway during sleep. Common OSA symptoms include snoring, daytime fatigue, abrupt awakenings with choking or gasping, dry mouth, morning headaches and difficulty concentrating. Approximately 60 % of people with OSA also have GERD. The two conditions seem to feed off each other: GERD can exacerbate or contribute to OSA, and pressure changes in the thorax during episodes of OSA can cause acid reflux. Small lifestyle changes can decrease your risk for GERD and OSA. If you have symptoms of acid reflux or OSA, and you haven’t seen a doctor, I invite you to contact my office to discuss and schedule an appointment.
