Second AP poll for football released

The second edition of the Associated Press high school football has been released. See where area teams stack up. Plus, see who leads the area in this week’s football Top of the Crop.

For the second week in a row, the Mentor football team is the second-ranked Division I team in Ohio, per the Associated Press.

Coach Steve Trivisonno’s Cardinals, who defeated Strongsvil­le, 4520, on Sept. 14 to improve to 4-0, pulled in six firstplace vote and 194 voting points in the second polling of the year.

The Cardinals, who travel to winless Brunswick this week, are second to Cincinnati Colerain for the second straight week. Colerain is 4-0, has 11 firstplace votes and 207 voting points.

In third place for the second week in a row is defending Division I state champion Pickeringt­on Central.

Mentor is one of eight area teams that appear in this week’s Associated Press poll. In other divisions:

• NDCL (4-0) moves up as the fifth-ranked team in Division III, while Kenston moved up to No. 10.

The Lions, who defeated Cleveland Central Catholic last week, garnered one first-place vote and 100 total points. They are just a few points behind fourthplac­e Bay (103).

Kenston pulled in 38 points, and trails No. 9 Columbus Bishop Hartley by 10 points.

• Perry (3-1) is ranked No. 11 in Division IV. The Pirates play 4-0 Beachwood this week. Their 38 voting points are not far behind the 47 points of No. 10 Waverly.

• In Division V, Gilmour (4-0) is 12th with 37 points, while Beachwood (4-0) is 14th with 16 points. Wickliffe (4-0) is tied for 16th with 14 points.

• Kirtland remains a strong No. 3 in Division VI, with two first-place votes and 172 voting points.

The Hornets trail No. 1 Coldwater (15 first-place votes, 212 voting points) and No. 2 Marion Local (5, 194).
