October beer making classes include batch to take home
Learn to brew beer and taste the results in a hands-on community-education course offered over four October Thursdays, beginning Oct. 4, by Cuyahoga Community College.
The science of beer making is the focus, with tips to start a home-brewing operation. Students will brew and bottle a batch of beer during the course.
Classes take place at Tri-C’s Hospitality Management Center of Excellence, 180 Euclid Ave. on Public Square.
Cost is $149, which includes parking. Students must be at least 21 to participate.

Kids make cupcakes
Kids 7 to 11 will learn how to make a variety of fun cupcakes in celebration of fall in a two-hour class at 10 a.m. Sept. 29 at the Loretta Paganini School of Cooking, 8613 Mayfield Road, Chester Township.
The hands-on class with chef Rae Peters will include Chocolate S’Mores Cupcakes; Vanilla Apple-Shaped Cupcakes; Candy Corn Cupcakes; Chocolate Football Tailgate Cupcakes; and Chocolate Owl Cupcakes.

Beer-tasting dinner
The Lodge at Geneva-onthe-Lake, 4888 N. Broadway, is hosting a Beer Tasting Dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 5 with beers from Warren-based microbrewery Clubhouse Brewing Co.
The evening begins with a tasting reception and local artisan charcuterie display of Na*Kyrsie Meats, preserved local fruits, and barrel-aged maple syrup from Bissell Maple Farm.
Oktoberfest-Märzen will be poured with the first course of freshly made soft pretzel with beer mustard and German sausage bites. The second-course blood orange salad will be topped with goat cheese fritters and crispy pancetta as Blackjack IPA is poured. Deuces Wild Doppelbock will be poured with the third course of wild boar two ways — as a wild boar chop and wild boar stew with whiskey-fired apples.
The finale will be a chocolate espresso lava cake with bourbon whipped cream and a caramel drizzle as Valhalla’s Finest Russian Imperial Stout is poured.
It’s $59 beginning with the beer tasting at 6 p.m. and dinner beginning at 7. Those who wish to make a night of it can sign up for a package for two that includes the tasting, dinner with beer pairing, overnight stay and breakfast the next morning for $305.

Great Western Reserve Clambake
Reservations are due Sept. 27 for the Lake County History Center’s Great Western Reserve Clambake set from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 30 on the spacious grounds of the Center at 415 Riverside Drive in Painesville Township.
Framed around a half chicken and a dozen clams, the bake will include clam chowder, sweet potato, corn, coleslaw, beverage and dessert. Pizza and hots dogs will be available for children. Beer and wine will be available for a donation.
Although members get a $5 discount, it’s $40 with an extra dozen clams for $15. Reserve: 440-639-2945.
