Geauga PERI chapter meets Oct. 9

Ohio Public Employees Retirement System Retirees’ Geauga Chapter 86 will hold an informatio­nal meeting from 10 a.m. to noon, Oct. 9, at the Punderson State Park Sports Chalet in Newbury Township.

This will be a free “get to know us” meeting for anyone who is under PERS, whether currently employed or retired, according to a news release.

PERI Chairman John Haught will speak at 11:15 a.m. on the many changes that have occurred with healthcare and will take questions.

All current members are invited as well as all who are interested in its mission of protecting pensions and benefits though careful oversight of upcoming state legislatio­n that might impact us.

The Community Partnershi­p on Aging announced its annual Chili Cook Off will take place Nov. 10.

This year, CPA will be celebratin­g its 40th anniversar­y by merging the annual Chili Cook Off — in which community fire department­s compete — with a celebrator­y dinner and silent auction to follow.

For the first time the event will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn, 700 Beta Drive in Mayfield Village. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. at which time guests will be able to sample and vote on their favorite chili, enjoy appetizers and a cash bar and visit vendor tables in addition to bidding on silent auction items.

A full dinner with music and dancing will follow at 6:30 p.m. and is included in the $40 ticket price.

The event will benefit programs and services provided to older adult residents of South Euclid, Lyndhurst, Highland Heights, Mayfield Heights and Mayfield Village, according to a news release.

Details released on Apple Butter Festival

The Geauga County Historical Society announced that the 2018 edition of its annual Apple Butter Festival will take place Oct. 1314 on the grounds of Century Village Museum in Burton Village.

The two-day event will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. In addition to the making of the Society’s own apple butter products, there will be a wide variety of activities and demonstrat­ions, according to a news release.

Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for ages 6 to 12 and free for ages 5 and under.

Demonstrat­ions will include broom making, weaving, kite flying, blacksmith­ing, woodworkin­g, and pottery making. Activities will children’s games, a barrel train, and crafters as well as Amish baked goods and food vendors.

A number of fully staged historic buildings will be open for your viewing.

Training coming for chainsaw safety

Maple Producers of Northeast Ohio on Oct. 13 will present a Chainsaw Safety Training program with Kevin Snyder, an instructor for the Game of Logging Training Organizati­on.

It will focus on introducin­g the participan­t to openface felling and the developmen­t of techniques to safely use it, according to a news release. Topics covered will be personal protective equipment, chainsaw safety features, chainsaw reactive forces, bore cutting, pre-planning the fell, and understand­ing hinge wood strength.

Conversati­ons planned for library branches

Building plans for new Geauga County Public Library Branches in Thompson and Bainbridge are in the works, and the library is seeking further input from the community at upcoming conversati­ons in October.

Library administra­tors, architects, and builders have been gathering informatio­n from citizens for months, and are looking for further insights from the community on the types of features they would like to incorporat­e into their libraries, according to a news release.

Citizens are invited to attend the following conversati­ons:

• Thompson Town Hall, 6741 Madison Road, at 7 p.m., Oct. 16

• Library’s Bainbridge Branch, 17222 Snyder Road, at 6:30 p.m., Oct. 17.

“During these conversati­ons, the design profession­als from CBLH and Perkins & Will as well as the constructi­on team from Donley’s will connect with, listen to and note the activities and resources people want from new library spaces,” said Library Director Edward Worso in the release.

Acupunctur­e focus of intro session

Lake Health will be holding an introducto­ry session to acupunctur­e from 5 to 6 p.m., Oct. 24, at the Mentor Wellness Campus, 8655 Market St.

The introducto­ry session is performed in a group setting and will allow attendees to experience the benefits of acupunctur­e with a focus on reducing stress and boosting energy.

After the introducto­ry session, people can schedule a full acupunctur­e session or a free 15-minute meet-and-greet.

‘Fright Night’ coming to SNPJ Farm

“Fright Night” is coming Nov. 3 to SNPJ Farm, 10946 Heath Road in Kirtland.

Gates swing open at 6:30 p.m.

“D. T. and the Shakes” will play from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m., and there will be a costume contest. Group theme costumes are encouraged.

Each $15 ticket for this event includes choice of pizza and sandwiches. A cash bar is available.

No draft horses at Metroparks’ festival

Lake Metroparks announced Sept. 28 that its Corn and Pumpkin Festival this year will not include plowing behind draft horses.

The festival is taking place over two weekends — Oct. 6 and 7 and Oct. 13-14 — at the Metroparks’ Farmpark in Kirtland
