Lincoln Library celebrates Hispanic heritage
For National Hispanic Heritage Month, Lake Erie College Lincoln Library is presenting a special exhibit that will be on display until Oct. 15.
“We have built a display with an interactive component,” Lincoln Library Director Jeanna Purse said. “We have posters with blurbs about 10 wellknown Hispanic authors with their books to check out displayed alongside. We have a display of decorative Mexican folk art from the main pottery centers of the country (from my own collection and a few borrowed and donated pieces).”
LEC student Angie Hernandez’s family also donated some Mexican goods for the display, according to the news release.
Additionally, there will be treats, cafe con leche and an investigative quiz that delves deeply into both exhibits and Hispanic arts.
There is a $10 gift certificate to Senors Mexican Restaurant pending the correct completion of the quiz. There is no time limit, but the first to complete it and bring it in will receive the certificate, Purses said.
Latin music will also be played for the exhibition.
National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period. It was enacted into law on Aug. 17, 1988, according to the website.
