Trubisky, Hunt break out in NFL’s Week 4
For the first time in their collective NFL careers, Mitchell Trubisky and Kareem Hunt can share a text or phone call with a message that might go something like this: “Congrats on an awesome game.”
Great, indeed — for Trubisky and Hunt.
For Trubisky, it was a historic performance Sept. 30 against Tampa Bay. The Mentor grad threw five first-half touchdown passes, and finished 19 of 26 passing for 354 yards and six TD passes. He also rushed for 53 yards on three carries. His QB rating for the game was 154.6.
The performance was a milestone for Trubisky on several fronts:
• Trubisky became the first player in NFL history with at least 350 passing yards, 50 rushing yards and six TDs in one game.
• He became the secondyoungest QB (24) to throw six TDs in a game. The Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes (22) is the youngest. He set that mark vs. the Steelers in Week 2.
• Trubisky joins an impressive list of quarterbacks in the last 30 years to throw five first-half TDs.
That list includes Peyton Manning, Donovan McNabb, Tom Brady (twice), Ben Roethlisberger, Joe Flacco and Aaron Rodgers.
In four games this season,
Trubisky has completed 91 of 130 passes (70 percent) for 945 yards, eight TDs and three interceptions. He also has 118 rushing yards and a rushing TD.
Hunt’s performance wasn’t as historical as Trubisky’s, but it was important for the Chiefs, who rallied from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat the Broncos, 27-23, on “Monday Night Football” on Oct. 1.
The South graduate’s four-yard TD run was the game-winner. It was a breakout for Hunt, who had his first big game of 2018. Against Denver, he had 121 rushing yards on 19 carries, plus 54 receiving
yards on three receptions.
For the season, Hunt has 289 rushing yards on 71 attempts and three TDs, plus a receiving TD.
Perhaps the most important stat for Hunt and Trubisky: 4-0 and 3-1. Those are the records of the Chiefs and Bears after their Week 4 victories.
