Mayfield, West G win district titles

The area produced two district champions in girls tennis Oct. 13, and five state qualifiers in all.

In Division I at the Springside Racquet & Fitness Center in Akron, the Mayfield doubles team of sophomore Hannah Kassaie and junior Caitlyn Hsu claimed the district championsh­ip, and will be a top seed at the state tournament in Columbus.

Kassaie and Hsu won tightly contested matches Oct. 13 to claim the championsh­ip. In a semifinal vs. Medina Highland’s Emily Hadler and Rachel Fannin, they won, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5, then defeated Westlake’s Demi Jhaveri and Ashley Michelich in the championsh­ip match, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3).

Also qualifying in D-I was Riverside’s Angelica Ross, who placed fourth in singles. Ross won her first two matches at the Oct. 1113 tournament, and lost to Magnificat’s Olivia Rondini in the third-place match, 6-0, 6-4.

In D-II, the area won its second district title of the day when West Geauga freshman Rylie Hanford took home the singles title. Hanford won her first three matches of the tournament with relative ease, then defeated Orange’s Blessing Nwaozuzu in the championsh­ip match, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

Also qualifying for state in D-II was Hawken’s Stephanie Shulman, who was fourth in singles competitio­n. She lost her thirdplace match to Rachel Buchinsky of Laurel.
