While Lake County voters elected to retain incumbent Auditor Ed Zupancic during the Nov. 6 general election, they also chose to elect a challenger for county commissioner.

Current state Rep. Ron Young, R-Leroy Township, defeated longtime commissioner Dan Troy 48,435 to 42,783, according to unofficial final results from the Lake County Board of Elections.

Troy has been county commissioner since 1999.

First elected to the Ohio House of Representatives, representing District 61, in 2010, Young was precluded from running for re-election in 2018 due to term limits.

He will begin his four-year term Jan. 1.

Young, who called his victory a “hard win,” said he wants to continue to serve the people of Lake County.

“I’m looking forward to improving the job environment as well as opportunities for economic growth. I’m looking forward to improving the job environment and opportunities for economic growth. The more jobs we have the more wealth we can

generate,” he added.

“This also means we can begin to resolve our problems sooner, and we’re seeing it already on different state levels and nationally.

“I want to build on the future in Lake County and help to accelerate creating more opportunities for our residents.”

Zupancic, a Republican who has held the position of auditor for 31 years, easily defeated Democratic

challenger Joe Shriver, 56,613 to 34,705, according to the Lake County Board of Elections.

Zupancic previously said he promises to continue to strive for clean audit opinions, maintain bond rating and strive to maintain good working relationships with all local governments.

“I have received a clean opinion from the auditor of state every year I have been auditor,” he said.

“This is important as it demonstrates strong fiscal controls and helps maintain the bond rating for

Lake County. This helps the county when it borrows funds as it receives a lower rate of interest, saving the county interest charges on notes and/or bonds. I promise to strive to continue to maintain these important functions.

“I have improved and increased the amount of online data available, such as CAVU/Farm Land detail, deed information and manufactured home information,” he said.

“I will strive to continue to put public information out on the website for all users.”
