Q: There always seems to be something new being introduced. Do you know of any services and/or devices that can make it easier for seniors to “age in place?” A: Today’s older adults can be better equipped to ‘age in place’ thanks to the recent introduction of new tech products, apps and services. And, because so many older adults are already using tech devices, they are more comfortable adapting to new ways for them to do the things the need to do – especially if it helps them maintain their independence. Let’s begin with transportation. Not too long ago, you had to depend on friends and family for transportation once you hung up your car keys. Now those who don’t drive can count on Uber and Lyft to get to appointments and stores. Another option is GoGo Grandparent, a service for those who do not have a smart phone or who are not comfortable using technology. To keep caregivers and family in the loop, GoGo Grandparent will send text alerts as trips are booked. Home delivery of prescriptions, groceries and household products is another option. Virtually anything can be delivered right to your door. Those who have difficulty with manual dexterity on tech devices can try new voice activated devices like Alexa and Google Home. The time it takes to learn how to use these devices will be well worth it once winter sets in. The latest generation of smart watch has integrated ECG (electrocardiogram) technology to detect a dangerously high or low heart rate or irregular heart rate. Some can detect falls and call 911. Hearing aids can come equipped with Bluetooth technology so wearers can clearly hear sound from their tv or smartphone. New doorbells give you the ability to see, hear and speak to those at your door, without opening the door to intruders. There is a growing use of telemedicine so patients can talk ‘face-to-face’ with a nurse or doctor without having to leave home. Some Medicare Advantage plans are now offering a selection of optional personal benefits as part of some plans, including transportation to and from medical appointments, home delivered meals following a hospital stay, in-home support, an allowance for safety devices, and more. So, the market is responding to what seniors need with innovative solutions. It is up to today’s seniors to take some time to investigate their options and then adapt to using products and services that will make their life easier, safer and more fulfilling.
