The Geauga County Historical Society announced it has published and released its two newest local history publications.

The earlier book, released in September and titled “The Squirrel Hunters of Geauga: The County’s Role in Ohio’s Civil War Minutemen,” relates the local response to the statewide call for men to defend Cincinnati from a feared Rebel invasion in 1862, according to a news release.

The later book, released in Octoberand titled “The Rebellion Begins: Geauga County in the First Months of the Civil War,” captures the county’s overnight transition from a place of anxious calm to a place dominated by the tribulations of war, the release stated. It addresses the spring and summer of 1861.

These books represent the first of several publications that are intended to tell the story of Geauga County in the War Between the States, the release stated.

These and other books published by the Historical Society may be purchased at the Crossroads Store on the grounds of Century Village Museum in Burton Village.

Each book provides a window into the county’s past and each conveys why this location is an interesting and often remarkable place to live, the release stated.

The publication of these books satisfies the two core missions of the Society — the preservation of Geauga County’s history and the education of its citizens as to that history.

Net proceeds from the sale of these books provide operating funds for Century Village Museum, the release stated.

Century Village Museum is located on the southeast corner of Burton Square, 14653 East Park S.
