Lakeland women off to a 5-0 start
Euclid grad Calasia Cunningham is leading scorer
His team’s 5-0 start in the 2018-19 season comes as no surprise to Lakeland Community College women’s coach Ornette Gardenhire.
“We are headed in the right direction,” said Gardenhire, who is coaching the LCC women for the third season after spending seven years as an assistant to LCC men’s coach Terry Bowe.
The Lakers went 5-20 and 2-14 in the Ohio Community College Athletic Association in Coleman’s first season as head coach.
Last season, the program made notable strides upward with records of 16-10 overall and 7-7 in the OCCAC.
“We have focused on recruiting talented athletes who also are good students and make cerebral plays on the court. They understand the flow of the game,” Coleman added.
Sophomore guard Calasia Cunningham (Euclid) and Ziona Williams have been a formidable duo. Cunningham is averaging a team-high 13.8 points. Williams is averaging 9.0 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists.
The Lakers are getting steady production from freshman guard Destiny Khay (9.8 points), sophomore forward Alicia Sephus (8.3 points, 7.5 rebounds) and sophomore guard Delesha Jackson (7.6 points).
Other players in the rotation are freshman guards Selah Richardson, Arielle DeBase (Brush) and Julie Hajdu (Kenston) as well as freshman center Angel Kingu (Lake Catholic).
