PLASTIC SURGERY
Q: How do I know what size breast implants I should get? How long will they last?
A: I will answer your second question first. Implants typically last your lifetime. The risk of mechanical implant failure is only one in 10,000. I see my patients at their 5, 7 and 10-year intervals. I now have patients who are 19 years post-op with no mechanical reason for me to remove their implants. So, this is a long-term decision, which leads back to your question about sizing. Some women decide they want to change their implant size, perhaps due to changes in their body weight or lifestyle. While this is always an option, you really want to consider your future as much as possible now. During your consultation, we take careful measurements of your breasts, height, weight and BMI (body mass index). We use a dimensional system to help stay within the parameters of your own skeletal structure. Then we discuss your desired appearance, and how our recommendation fits your body habits. Sometimes, patients show me photographs of women they think look great who have a similar body as theirs, including actual patients on my websites – ThisCanBU.com or MentorPlasticSurgery.com.
If there’s a major disconnection between your desires and your body habits, I will explain the technical features of your surgery, so you fully understand what will be involved. For example, if you want to very substantially enhance very little breasts, we may need to expand your tissue before returning to the operating room to insert permanent implants. As one of my most popular procedures, I know every person is unique and we will work closely to satisfy your expectations.
