Brandon Staley is on the move to the Broncos.

Staley, a Perry grad and former John Carroll assistant, spent the last two seasons as outside linebackers coach with the Bears. He will have that same position with the Broncos, who announced Staley’s addition to Vic Fangio’s staff Jan. 15.

Fangio was the Bears’ defensive coordinator last season, and was named Denver’s head coach last week.

Staley is just 36 but already has 14 years experience as a coach on a variety of levels, but his rise to the NFL ranks was remarkable.

In 2016, he was Coach Tom Arth’s defensive coordinator at John Carroll when the team defeated No. 1-ranked Mount Union and made a run to the NCAA Division III national semfinal round. That season, Staley won the National Coordinator of the Year award in D-III.

When Arth took the head job at FCS Chattanooga shortly after the 2016 season, Staley joined him in Tennessee. Not long after that decision, Staley got the job with the Bears.

Staley coached at JCU in 2013, then again in 2015 and 2016. Other stops include FCS James Madison, the University of Tennessee, Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College, the University of St. Thomas and Northern Illinois.

The last two seasons in Chicago, Staley’s linebacker unit produced 51 sacks. He also coached All-Pro Khalil Mack after he was acquired by the Bears prior to the start of the 2018 season.

As a player, Staley was the starting quarterback at the University of Dayton in 2003 and 2004.
