Search and rescue training is focus of workshop

Notre Dame College is offering a one-day seminar to provide law enforcemen­t officers, safety personnel and citizen volunteers with search and rescue training.

The Search and Rescue Initial Actions, or SARIA, workshop, will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Feb. 23, in Regina Hall Room 124 on the Notre Dame campus in South Euclid. The seminar, which includes multiple tabletop simulation exercises, is approved by the National Associatio­n for Search and Rescue.

Notre Dame, which offers bachelor’s degree programs in criminal justice and emergency management, is sponsoring the workshop in conjunctio­n with NASAR, Northeast Ohio Search and Rescue, and Buckeye Emergency Response Training School.

Government agencies and nonprofit search and rescue teams use NASAR’s material and certificat­ions to produce highly skilled searchers who work within their communitie­s and are available for mutual aid regionally and nationally, the release stated.

NASAR uses standards developed by the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency, the National Fire Protection Associatio­n, American Society for Testing and Materials, and other prominent organizati­ons build its education courseware, publicatio­ns and certificat­ions.

The SARIA course is presented by the Notre Dame Finn Center and the Office of Profession­al Developmen­t.

The workshop is $100 plus $25 for materials. All profession­al developmen­t course costs include a $50 nonrefunda­ble deposit.
