Eklund to head Senate Judiciary Committee

Munson Township Republican John Eklund will serve this legislativ­e term as the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Eklund, 63, was selected for the role by Senate President Larry Obhof, R-Medina.

“I look forward to the challenges ahead as the Judiciary Committee begins to tackle some of the most important issues facing Ohio,” Eklund said in a statement. “We have taken many steps to reform our criminal justice system, and keeping our families and communitie­s safe remains a top priority.

“As chairman, I look forward to our work on policies that will create a safer Ohio, while also focusing on fair sentencing, rehabilita­tion and getting those who serve their time back into the workforce.” Eklund is a senior counsel at Calfee, Halter & Griswold LLP where he has worked for more than 35 years, according to a news release from his senate office. Much of his legal career has been centered on areas pertaining to antitrust litigation, trade regulation, price fixing, class actions, and mergers and acquisitio­ns.

He is a graduate of Washington and Lee School of Law and holds a bachelor’s degree from Union College. He has been named an Ohio Super Lawyer in antitrust litigation, is listed in Best Lawyers in America for Antitrust Law, and is recognized as one of America’s Leading Lawyers in Chambers USA.

Senate District 18 includes Kirtland, Kirtland Hills, Mentor Wards 1-3, North Perry Village, Perry Village, Waite Hill, Willoughby Hills, the townships of Concord, Leroy, Madison, Perry and parts of Painesvill­e Township in Lake County; Hunting Valley, Middlefiel­d, Burton, and the townships of Auburn, Bainbridge, Burton, Chardon, Chester, Munson, Newbury, Parkman and Russell in Geauga County; plus Portage County in its entirety.
