The Black Knights, behind Hanna and Kenzie Grubbs, defeated St. John to advance to the sectionalfinal round. The next step is against state-ranked Cornerstone. The Patriots have been without Michaela Cloonan (injury) for the past handful of games, but still have double-figure scorers in Riley Stopp (13.3), Madison Cloonan (12.7) and Kailey Tyna (12.6). Cornerstone plays ferocious defense, which is something the Black Knights will have to contend with.

Winner advances to play the winner of (2) Independence and (7) Lutheran East in a district semifinal on Feb. 27
Wellington defeated Wickliffe to advance to the sectional final round against Kirtland. The Dukes are led by Jalen Gibbs (16.7 ppg, 8.5 rpg) and Lexi Wright (8.0 ppg). Kirtland plays a smothering defense that often turns turnovers into points. The team gets good scoring balance from the likes of Grace Wolfe (11.2), Jenna Sayle (10.6) and Lauren Snyder, among others.

The Huskies beat Grand Valley to punch their ticket to the sectional championship round. Now comes the top-seeded Golden Flashes of Champion. The Golden Flashes are led by Abby White, Emma Gumont and Savannah Dodrill. The Huskies are led by senior Camille Cummins (12.9 points, 17.0 rebounds), but it was Haley Domen’s 22 points that led Cardinal in the win over GV.

This is AOA’s first season in the OHSAA tournament, and the Phoenix want to make it a long stay. Their three losses are to North, Cornerstone and Loudenville — all top seeds in their respective tournaments. Nika Humeniuk averages 16 points and 9.7 rebounds.
