District finals in girls hoops on tap

- By John Kampf jkampf@news-herald.com @NHPreps on Twitter

North faces Euclid in Division I, and Perry takes on Gilmour in Division II with regional berths on the line. John Kampf previews each game.

(2) EUCLID VS. (1) NORTH

What: Division I district final

Where: Perry When: Feb. 28, 7 p.m. Records: Euclid 17-7, North 23-1

On deck: Winner advances to the Canton Regional to play the winner of Solon and Cleveland Heights at 6:15 p.m. on March 5 at the Canton Civic Center

For the record: This is a rematch of a Dec. 15 game North won in a landslide, 81-54. But a much closer game can likely be expected this time. Two of the area’s premier players — Euclid’s Constance Chaplin and North’s Destiny Leo — headline this matchup. Both average nearly 30 points per game. Leo had 18 points and 14 rebounds in a district semifinal win over Chardon, while Chaplin had 21 points and 18 rebounds against Mayfield. Keep an eye on two other major players in this game — North’s Abby Carter (11 points vs. Chardon) and Euclid’s Alexis Reese (21 points, 12 rebounds vs. Mayfield). This game might come down to which team gets the most productivity from their supplemental players outside of Leo and Chaplin. Don’t expect a 27-point margin again. Kampf’s pick: North

(1) PERRY VS. (2) GILMOUR

What: Division II district final

Where: Lakeside, 6600 Sanborn Road, Ashtabula When: Feb. 28, 7 p.m. Records: Gilmour 16-8, Perry 20-4 On deck: Winner advances to the Barberton Regional to play the winner of Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary and Laurel at 6:15 on March 5

For the record: A rematch of last year’s district final won by Gilmour. Both are much different because of graduation and new coaches (Roy Infalvi Jr. at Perry and Julie Solis at Gilmour) at both schools. Both teams had outstanding guard play in the district semifinals. Perry sophomores Elle Infalvi and Madyson Hacking scored 25 of their team’s 29 second-half points in a 4844 win over NDCL. Annika Corcoran and Maddie Puletti combined for 38 points in a 66-40 win over Geneva. Keep an eye on Perry guard Anna Sorine and Gilmour forward Lizzie Bender. Both are known for making big plays in clutch situations. Both teams play exceptional pressure defense. So this game could be low-scoring, with a late turnover determining the outcome.

Kampf’s pick: Gilmour
