(4) South vs. (5) Solon

-

D-I Euclid District sectional final Willoughby South High School March 2, 7 p.m. South 17-5, Solon 14-8

The winner advances to a Euclid District semifinal against the winner between Mentor and Mayfield March 6.

Solon blew out John Hay by 43 points. The Comets now play South, whose season they’ve ended the last two years, although the Rebels pushed Solon in each of those games. Unlike the past two years, South has home-court advantage. Despite the graduation of Sincere Carry, a favorite to win the Atlantic 10’s Rookie of the Year, Solon is still dangerous behind guards Trent Williams and Mike Bekelja. The Rebels’ most significant edge lies in the frontcourt, where 6-foot-6 forward Damion Williams and 6-foot-6 wing Xavier Hopps give South a major size advantage over the Comets. If the Rebels play with poise, attack the basket and prevent Solon from putting together a big run, South can advance to the district round for the first time since 2016.
