Monsters drop 3-2 decision in Toronto

Adam Clendening and Zac Dalpe scored goals, but the Monsters fell, 3-2, in Toronto to the Marlies.

Both goals for the Monsters came in the third period down, 3-0, with Clendening lighting the lamp at 4:14 and Dalpe at 13:43. Assists on Clendening’s goal went to Mark Letestu and Justin Scott, and Ryan MacInnis had a helper on Dalpe’s tally.

Brad Thiessen recorded 25 saves for the Monsters.

College basketball

CLEVELAND STATE TOPS YOUNGSTOWN STATE >> Tyree Appleby and Jaalam Hill scored 25 and 22 points, respective­ly, and Cleveland State defeated Youngstown State, 89-80, in overtime. Appleby opened the extra period with a 3-pointer and Cleveland State led the rest of the way. He and Hill combined for 12 of the Vikings’ 18 points in OT. Appleby made 8 of 9 free throws and six assists. Hill was 10 of 13 from the floor with four boards and four assists. Seth Millner added 12 points for Cleveland State (10-21, 5-13 Horizon League).

RANGERS PITCHER HAS JAW BROKEN BY LINE DRIVE >> Rangers right-hander Luke Farrell had his jaw broken by a line drive during a spring training game against the Giants. Farrell was struck on the right side of his jaw by a ball off the bat of Jalen Miller with one out in the ninth inning. The Rangers say Farrell had a CT scan and X-rays, which revealed a non-displaced fracture in the jaw. He was released from the hospital a few hours later and is expected to visit a maxillofac­ial specialist March 4.

EMBIID HOPES TO RETURN NEXT WEEK >> 76ers All-Star center Joel Embiid expects to return to the lineup next week from a sore left knee that has cost him the last five games. Embiid sat out again against the Warriors and has not played since the All-Star game. The 24-year-old Embiid is averaging 27.3 points and 13.5 rebounds in 54 games for the Sixers. Embiid underwent an MRI last week, which revealed no structural damage, and he will undergo physical therapy.

Golf

SINGH IN HUNT >> Vijay Singh, at 56 years old, will be in the final pairing today at The Honda Classic. Singh shot a 5-under 65 to get to 6 under for the week. That put him one shot behind Wyndham Clark after three rounds at PGA National, and they’ll be the final group in the final round.
