Geauga County commissioners this week approved more than $1.6 million worth of road work, among several construction projects slated for the upcoming season.

Burton-based Ronyak Paving was awarded the following projects March 5:

• Asphalt resurfacing of Mentor Road in Chardon Township for about $1 million

• Asphalt resurfacing of Munn Road in Auburn Township for $382,066

In addition, commissioners hired Grade Line Inc. of Chardon for Wilson Mills Road drainage improvements in Chester Township in the amount of $240,353.

Wilson Mills Road also will be resurfaced along about a 3-mile stretch, which has an average daily traffic volume of roughly 7,500 cars.

“Notably, the Wilson Mills resurfacing project will be preceded by a major culvert replacement project that includes 12 different culverts being removed and replaced in that section,” said Geauga County Engineer’s Office Administrator Frank Antenucci. “That culvert replacement project will last approximately 45 days in duration and include road closures.”

The resurfacing is expected to be bid in late May.

The Mentor Road project area is nearly 5 miles and is expected to start in early spring, with completion within about 45 days. It carries about 4,000 cars a day and was last paved in 2007.

About 1 ½ miles of Munn Road will be repaved, starting in May or June and done in about 15 days.

Actual construction schedules have not yet been determined.

“We have done our best to ensure proper maintenance of those roads and, accordingly, those roads are all heavily crack-sealed and have numerous locations with partial depth asphalt pavement repairs,” Antenucci said.

Traffic is expected to be maintained during the work, Deputy Engineer Shane Hajjar said.

“The traveling public should expect some minimal delays, and should proceed slowly and cautiously through work zones to ensure the safety of the workers and (motorists),” he said.

Antenucci says the department has “a big year ahead.”

“The Engineer’s Office will also be performing resurfacing projects on Rapids Road, Clay Street, Kile Road and Caves Road … all with traffic maintained and less than 30 days in duration,” he said. “We will also be performing a single culvert replacement on Taylor Wells Road that will last approximately 21 days in duration and also require road closure.”
