Baldwin Wallace University

Daniel Eierman of Chardon was among 30 Baldwin Wallace University students who gave up a week of summer break to make a difference through BW’s Alternative Break service program. The program facilitated four diverse experiences with student volunteers traveling to Clarkston, Georgia; Kissimmee, Florida; Portland, Oregon; and Raleigh, North Carolina. Each journey was led by a BW student with support from a University faculty or staff adviser.

Eierman, a graduate of Chardon High School majoring in software engineering, volunteered to take part in the alternative break experience in Kissimmee, Florida. The team of eight students partnered with Give Kids the World to provide entertainment and put on fun activities for children with chronic illnesses and their families. Give Kids the World partners with wish-granting organizations to provide children with chronic illnesses and their families accommodations, meals, daily entertainment, transportation and tickets to Central Florida theme parks and other attractions. Eierman also served as the trip leader with support from staff adviser Devin Basile.

The BW Alternative Break service program provides students with opportunities to make a difference, travel to another area, learn new skills and meet people with similar interests. Participants commit to a six-week, pre-trip curriculum including issue education, organization orientation, team building and a full-day retreat on social justice and cultural competency.
