Couple’s grandson earns scholarship
The grandson of Thomas and BettyAnn Eiswerth of Mentor, Zachary Carson, will be attending North Carolina State University this fall on a full scholarship. Zachary (Zack) has always dreamed of going to college in the South where it is warmer and sunnier than in his native Hudson, his grandparents said. However, with the cost of out-of-state tuition, it seemed his dream was going to be limited to the southern border of Ohio.
Zack’s parents, Doug and Gemma, still took Zack on visits to several southern colleges. With his goal of majoring in Chemical Engineering, he found North Carolina State to be an especially attractive choice. Through his application process Zack learned about NC State’s Paper Science and Engineering Program. He also learned that they have what is called the “Super Scholars Program”. This program offers one full scholarship to an out-ofstate student each year. So Zack applied for the program and the scholarship.
The Super Scholars Program is a means to alleviate some of the financial stresses for a select few out-of-state students, with the hopes of capturing talent to the Pulp and Paper division at NC State. It is a highly competitive process that takes applications from numerous, well qualified candidates. The Pulp and Paper Foundation is able to award one of these exceptional, well-rounded students a full four-year scholarship to NC State.
This year the Foundation invited 11 out-of-state finalists to campus in February to interview with a student and an alumni panel to narrow down the candidates. Over the weekend the prospective students are introduced to current students, tour the campus, and are exposed to the pulp and paper labs.
Zack learned he was the one student offered the scholarship for tuition, room and board for four years, according to his grandparents. He still has to pay for fees, books and travel. He plans to earn a double major in Chemical Engineering and Paper Science Engineering.
