Open house set Aug. 10 for city’s new senior center

- Staff report

The new David E. Anderson Senior Center in Willoughby will be holding an open house on Aug. 10, ahead of its opening day.

From 2:30 to 4 p.m., visitors are invited to an open house to tour the facility and learn about the programs that are offered there. The new senior center is located at 36939 Ridge Road.

Members will be able to access the center beginning Aug. 12. There are over 1,500 members of the senior center, according to an August mayor’s report.

The senior center is part of Union Village, a collaborative development between the city of Willoughby, the West End YMCA and South High School.

“This will represent the largest construction project in Willoughby’s history, and one of the most unique collaborations in the state of Ohio,” the report stated.

The single-story senior center will feature flexible and expandable spaces for programming, the report stated. The facility is also connected to the West End YMCA and South High School field house, which will allow more opportunities for programs. Conversations about Union Village began around 2014. Afterward, then-Mayor David Anderson suggested that the collaboration between Willoughby-Eastlake Schools and the YMCA could also be an opportunity for the city to build its new senior center.

The previous Willoughby Senior Center is located on Brown Avenue.

Ribbon-cutting ceremonies for the new senior center, West End YMCA and South High School are scheduled for Sept. 14.
