Homework help available at the Hub

Children in first through sixth grades can get homework help from a certified teacher this September at Mentor Public Library’s newest branch, The Hub inside of Mentor High School.

The library’s tutor will help children in first through third grades from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. every Monday except Labor Day. Then, fourth- through sixth-graders can receive assistance from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays.

There is no cost to participat­e and no registrati­on required, according to a news release. Availabili­ty is on a walk-in basis only.

The Hun is open to all for study and quiet tutoring from 3 to 8 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays during the school year. The Hub also houses a state-ofthe-art makerspace.

PERI chapter meeting Sept. 5

The next meeting of Lake County Public Employee Retirees, Inc. Chapter 28 will be at noon, Sept. 5.

The meeting will be held at Pine Ridge Country Club, 30601 Ridge Road in Wickliffe. Carol Shamakian will speak on the History of Steele Mansion in Painesvill­e, and there will be a 5050 drawing.

Lunch is $15 and reservatio­ns must be made no later than Sept. 1. Gluten-free and vegetarian meals are available upon request.

Willoughby church plans rummage, bake sale

Grace Episcopal Church, 36200 Ridge Road in Willoughby, will hold its Annual Rummage Sale and Bake Sale on Sept. 7.

It will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine. Grace will continue to collect items for the sale through Sept. 2.

All proceeds benefit Grace’s Little Feet ministry, which provides a new pair of shoes or boots to eligible children at four area elementary schools, according to a news release.

Get entries ready for art contest

The 28th (Unveiled) Lake County Art Contest will soon be accepting entries.

New and known artists 16 years and older are welcome to participat­e, according to a news release.

There is a $5 entry fee and drop-off dates are Sept. 3 from noon to 6 p.m. and Sept. 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Mentor City Hall, 8500 Civic Center Blvd.

The opening public reception is 7 to 8:30 p.m., Sept. 13, also at city hall.

Monetary awards will be given for the Dorothy McNamara Maloney Best in Show, and first and second place in each category, the release stated.

Accepted categories are watercolor, oil/acrylic, photograph­y, mixed media, drawing, 3D. Art pieces are to be created in the last year.

All entries are to be mounted, framed for hanging.

Sausage Festival coming Sept. 11

The 16th annual Slovenian Sausage Festival, hosted by the National Cleveland-Style Polka Hall of Fame is set for Sept. 11 at SNPJ Farm in Kirtland.

Polka bands and sausagemak­ers will help festival goers with dining and dancing, from 1 to 8 p.m.

More than 50 accordioni­sts and musicians are scheduled to appear, and attendees are invited to bring their own squeezebox and join a jam session, according to a news release.

Attendees can sample sausages from each vendor and then pick their favorites. Winners will be presented at 6 p.m.

Attendees also can choose from an assortment of side dishes, desserts and refreshmen­ts from vendors and in the kitchen.

SNPJ Farm is at 10946 Heath Road.

Advance tickets are $10 each and are available at the Polka Hall of Fame, 605 East 222nd St. in Euclid, or $12 day of the event. It is free for those under 18.
