Canes’ Mattheos to miss camp fighting cancer

- The Associated Press

Carolina Hurricanes prospect Stelio Mattheos will miss training camp while he fights testicular cancer.

General manager Don Waddell said Monday that the 20-year-old forward is expected to return to full health and will resume training for the upcoming season once he completes treatment and is cleared by doctors.

Mattheos was diagnosed in June, two days after helping Carolina’s AHL affiliate in Charlotte win a championship. He had surgery to remove one testicle and has completed multiple courses of chemotherapy during the past two months.

Carolina drafted Mattheos in the third round in 2017 and he joined Charlotte late in the regular season before playing in 14 playoff games.

BRONCOS CUT THREE VETERAN PLAYERS >> The Broncos created more than $4 million in salary cap space by cutting a trio of veterans Aug. 26, savings that could go toward a seasoned backup quarterback or middle linebacker should they seek to plug holes on their roster.

The Broncos jettisoned sixth-year defensive lineman Zach Kerr, 10th-year outside linebacker Dekoda Watson and fifth-year returner/ receiver Nick Williams.

Kerr was due a $1.5 million salary this season with a cap hit of just over $2 million.

Watson’s salary and cap hit were both $1.55 million and Williams recently signed a oneyear, $805,000 contract that carried a cap hit of $645,000.

CHIEFS SIGN NEW BACKUP QB >> The Chiefs lost backup quarterback Chad Henne to a fractured ankle in their penultimate preseason game, and they signed veteran Matt Moore on Aug. 26 to provide depth behind starter Patrick Mahomes.

Henne will have surgery on the ankle he broke during Aug. 24 game against San Francisco.

The Chiefs have two other quarterbacks on their roster in Chase Litton and Kyle Shurmur, but neither has distinguished himself in the preseason. The two were competing for a No. 3 job behind Mahomes and Henne, with Shurmur appearing to have the edge heading into Thursday night’s game in Green Bay.

The 35-year-old Moore sat out last season after playing 10 seasons with the Dolphins and Panthers. He started 30 games and threw 45 touchdown passes with 36 interceptions.
