Girls on the Run seeks to empower students
Wickliffe Schools is looking for third- and fourthgrade female students with some pep to their step.
The district is partnering with Girls on the Run, a national non-profit group that encourages female empowerment through physical activity.
Together, they are presenting young female students the chance to be on an extracurricular track and field team, which culminates in a 5K run on Nov. 5.
The district says that Girls on the Run “is a program for girls that encourages them to recognize their individual strengths and celebrate connections with others.”
It adds that “Girls gain a better understanding of who they are and what’s important to them, the value of teamwork and healthy relationships and how they can have a positive impact on the world. Physical activity is woven into the program to inspire an appreciation for fitness and healthy habits and to teach life skills including treating others with care, practicing gratitude and managing emotions.”
The season runs Sept. 10 to Nov. 10 with weekly practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 4 p.m. The district says that locations for the practices are

still being determined. Registration is still open, but limited to a first-come, firstserve basis.
Registration fees total $165 per child. Girls on the Run organizers state that “a family that can afford to pay $165 is asked to pay the full amount. It is our policy to never turn away a girl based on financial need, and we are proud to offer scholarships at all locations.”
Girls on the Run does add, however, “The financial sustainability of our program depends on the honesty and integrity of parents who choose their appropriate registration amount. It is essential that each family contribute as much toward the full cost of the registration fee as it can afford.”
