Tony Fisher Award quest commences

John Kampf is back with an update of how candidates for the Tony Fisher Award, The News-Herald’s top high school football honor, fared in Week 1 on the gridiron as contention for the award commenced.

The Tony Fisher Award goes to The News-Herald’s high school football player of the year. It is named after the former Euclid star, the 1997 Ohio Mr. Football, who went on to play at Notre Dame and then in the NFL. This is a weekly watch list of players in considerat­ion for the award. It’s a fluid list that can and will change weekly. The Tony Fisher Award is tentativel­y scheduled to be awarded Monday, Nov. 25, at a special edition of the Varsity Chalk Talk show at Hooley House. Jaylen Anderson, Perry: Ran for 65 yards and also caught five passes for 64 yards and a touchdown in the Pirates’ 63-54 win over Riverside. D.J. Bowman, Chardon: Carried 17 times for 85 yards and two touchdowns in the Hilltopper­s’ 41-3 win over West Geauga. Alex Dragas, Madison: Threw for 143 yards and a touchdown and also ran for a score in the Blue Streaks’ 22-19 loss to Geneva. Luke Floriea, Mentor: Caught four passes for 61 yards and a touchdown in the Cardinals’ 29-28 win over St. Edward. Chase Fortkamp, Wickliffe: Carried 14 times for 95 yards and two touchdowns, and also caught two passes for 96 yards and two scores, in the Blue Devils’ 54-18 win over Oberlin. Luke Gardner, Kirtland: Carried five times for 78 yards and scored two touchdowns in the Hornets’ 35-0 win over Lakeview. Michael Huss, Mayfield: Completed 10 of 17 passes for 121 yards and a touchdown in the Wildcats’ 45-21 win over Walsh Jesuit. Ian Kipp, Mentor: Completed 11 of 25 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown and also ran for 129 yards and a score in the Cardinals’ 29-28 win over St. Edward. Jaabir Mujihad, Euclid: Carried 30 times for 149 yards in the Panthers’ 29-24 win over Glenville. Jack Robinson, NDCL: Ran for 44 yards and caught two passes for 63 yards and a touchdown in the Lions’ 26-22 loss to South. Jack Porter, Kenston: Carried 20 times for 124 yards in the Bombers’ 35-0 win over Black River. Charles Rosser, Benedictin­e: Caught five passes for 113 yards and a touchdown in the Bengals’ 52-26 win over Ursuline. Drew Schiano, Perry: Completed 21 of 32 passes for 353 yards and nine touchdowns, and also ran for 23 yards, in the Pirates’ 63-54 win over Riverside. Rico Small, South: Caught six passes for 75 yards and a touchdown in the Rebels’ 26-22 win over NDCL. Mason Sullivan, Kirtland: Carried 12 times for 71 yards and two touchdowns in the Hornets’ 35-0 win over Lakeview. Charlie Taylor, Geneva: Carried 10 times for 40 yards and the game-winning touchdown in the Eagles’ 22-19 win over Madison. Jon Tomcufcik, Kenston: Completed 11 of 15 passes for three touchdowns, and also ran for a touchdown, in the Bombers’ 35-0 win over Black River. Brian Trobel, Mentor: Carried 27 times for 191 yards and two touchdowns, and also caught a pass for 17 yards, in the Cardinals’ 29-28 win over St. Edward. Dion Valentine, Euclid: Completed 6 of 9 passes for 95 yards and a touchdown in the Panthers’ win over Glenville. Max Vujaklija, Chardon: Was injured and did not play in the Hilltopper­s’ 41-3 win over West Geauga.
