Wayne Monroe Coil

-

Memorial service for Wayne Monroe Coil, 88, of Mentor, will be noon Saturday, Sept. 14, 2019, at Reformation Lutheran Church, 34730 Lakeshore Boulevard, Eastlake. Family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Wayne passed away Saturday, August 3, 2019. He was born April 24, 1931, in St. Marys, Ohio, where he grew up and attended St. Marys High School.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from June 1949 to December 1952, based in Japan during the Korean conflict.

Wayne then earned a bachelor’s degree from Bowling Green State University. He later attended Lakeland Community College.

While in college, he met Patricia Guthman, another BGSU Falcon. They married in 1955. They had two daughters and lived in Eastlake, among other places around Ohio, before settling in Mentor for 50 years.

Wayne’s first jobs were at St. Marys Foundry, Lawler’s Greenhouse (St. Marys), Goodyear Tire & Rubber, LaSalle & Koch (a Toledo department store) and the Higbee Co., before he became a buyer for Reliance Electric, from which he retired after 35 years.

When younger, he bowled and played racquetball. For many years, he enjoyed the pool and exercise bikes at Mentor Heisley Racquet and Fitness Club. Online, his hobbies included playing video poker, Words With Friends and Word Chums with people all over the country.

A diligent, savvy investor, he was chairman of the Reformation Lutheran Church Trust Fund from 1980 to 2017. As a result of that and many other acts of service to the church, he was named its Person of the Year in 2014.

He enjoyed traveling with his family. As befits an Air Force veteran, their adventures often took to the air — hot-air ballooning in Phoenix and the Napa Valley, a glider flight in New York and parasailing in Mexico. Closer to the ground, they rafted the New River. Their travels took them around the world, including trips to Japan, Tahiti and more than a dozen countries in Europe, as well as a memorable visit to Australia, highlighted by seeing kangaroos at Healesville Sanctuary and riding a cable car over the rainforest near Cairns.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Pat, of 64 years; daughters, Marybeth (Keith) Carroll and Kathryn Ann (John) Kroll; granddaughters, Susan Carroll, Elizabeth (Richard) Dimmock, Melissa (Richard) Davidson and Michelle Carroll; and four great-grandsons; as well as his brother, Jerry (Mary); and many nieces, nephews and good friends.

Final resting place will be in Western Reserve Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Reformation Lutheran Church Trust Fund, 34730 Lakeshore Boulevard, Ohio, 44095 (440Eastlake, 942-7166).
