Mayfield, Kenston light up the scoreboard

Before the skies opened and drenched Mayfield Wildcat Stadium, the hosts pull away from Nordonia before play is halted, and Kenston dispatches West Geauga, 27-10, in a weather-shortened contest.

With Kenston leading West Geauga, 27-10, on Sept. 13 with 10:47 left in the third quarter, the game was agreed upon as the final score due to inclement weather.

It is rare when you can say a team that won by 17 points survived. But whether it was the full harvest moon or Friday the 13th bad luck, it was anything but a typical night for Kenston.

The first play of the game saw the Bombers commit a penalty that called back a 65-yard catch and run for a touchdown by Tyler Mintz. Four plays later, all-Ohio running back Jack Porter put the ball on the carpet and the Wolverines recovered.

However, as they have done in the past several games dating back to last season, Kenston’s defense rose to the occasion. The Bombers got on the board first when Tyler Kestranek intercepted a West Geauga pass and returned it 65 yards for a touchdown. The extra point made it 7-0.

After forcing a Wolverines punt, Kenston marched down the field and scored on a 39-yard pass from Jon Tomcufcak to Ja’Von Middleton with a little under two minutes in the first period. With the successful conversion, the Bombers led 14-0 and seemed to be in command.

West Geauga moved down in seven plays and scored on a 39-yard field goal by Joey Dillala. Those were the first points Kenston had allowed all year.

A 13-play drive that chewed up close to five minutes of clock culminated in a 19-yard pass from Tomcufcak to Porter and put the Bombers up 20-3. The Wolverines blocked the extra point.

West Geauga needed only two plays to score as Trae Zimmerman scampered 79 yards for a TD. The extra point was good to cut the lead in half.

After both teams alternated turning the ball over in their next possessions, Tomcufcak attempted a pass into the end zone but it came up short and was intercepted on the goal line and returned to the Bombers 21 yard line with eight seconds to go in the half. Instead of running a play to get closer for a field goal the Wolverines attempted the kick. It was subsequently blocked and returned by Middleton for a 65-yard TD and his second score of the game.

Apparently Mother Nature is the only thing that can stop the Jack Porter’s consecutive 100-yard game streak at 20 as he finished the night with 91 yards on 13 carries.

Kenston (3-0) travels to Eastlake North next week. West Geauga (0-3) hosts Lakeside.
