West Point, Annapolis will send officials to info fair

- Staff report

Congressman Dave Joyce, RBainbridge, announced that his office will host an information fair on Sept. 21 for prospective nominees to United States service academies.

The event — from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Auburn Career Center — will be attended by officials from each of the five service academies: the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York; the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland; the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado; the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York.

This information session is a great opportunity for high school students to find out if attending a service academy is right for them,” Joyce said in a news release. “To those planning to attend, I applaud your interest in serving our great nation.”

The information session will include an overview of academy life, instructions on how to work with Joyce’s office throughout the nomination process, as well as an opportunity for students to meet with academy representatives and discuss requirements for admission, the release stated. Academy nominations are available only through a member of Congress, the vice president, or the president. After receiving a nomination, students must then be accepted by the individual academy for final admission.

Admission to the information fair is free. Auburn Career Center is located at 8140 Auburn Road in Concord Township. For additional information, or if there are any questions about the event, contact Maureen Jeffery at Joyce’s Mentor office at 440-352-3939 or Maureen. Jeffery@mail.house.gov.
