Q: I was referred for a neuropsychological evaluation. What exactly is this, and why do I need it?
A: This is a very common question, so thank you for asking! A neuropsychological evaluation is a noninvasive, comprehensive assessment of different brain functioning that is completed by a Neuropsychologist. This provider is a specialist that acts as a bridge between Psychology and Neurology. During an evaluation, a number of different functions of the brain can be assessed, including but not limited to: memory, attention, language, processing speed, visuospatial ability, executive functioning, and personality and psychological functioning. While an MRI is common to determine brain structure, a neuropsychological evaluation is recommended to determine how the brain is working or functioning. There are several different medical and psychiatric conditions that can affect how we process information and interact with the world. Common reasons for your neuropsychological evaluation may include, but are not limited to: dementia, ADHD, learning disability, stroke and TIA, traumatic brain injury, autoimmune CNS conditions, movement disorders, and mental health conditions. Neuropsychologists are often tasked with helping other care providers in providing treatment recommendations and assisting with diagnosis. This will help your providers create the best possible, individualized care, for your needs. I can assure you there is nothing to be nervous about when attending your neuropsychological evaluation. You can prepare to settle in for a 3-4 hour appointment, which accounts for taking breaks and going at each individuals’ pace. At PBHS, we have an excellent team of psychometricians, who administer assessments, as well as the only independently licensed neuropsychologist within Lake County. Please give us a call if you have any further questions on how we can assist you.
