Indoor sports facility proposed
Volleyball, pickleball to be among offerings in 21,000-square foot space
Other offerings are to include yoga, kickboxing, karate, selfdefense classes and personal training.
Projects related to recreation, wellness, auto repairs and a neighborhood church are up for review this week by the Mentor Planning Commission.
The panel will hold public hearings Feb. 13 on the following items:
• A conditional-use permit to allow a wellness center as a similar use at 7533-B Tyler Blvd. in the M-1 Light Manufacturing District by Synergy Wellness and Tyler Clover LLC
• A conditional-use permit to allow a recreational facility at 8820 East Ave. in the M-1 Light Manufacturing
District by RockCity Sports and 8820 East Avenue LLC
• A conditional-use permit to allow a church at 7643 Lake Shore Blvd. in the R-2 Single-family Residential District by The Church in Wickliffe/The Church in Mentor and Bold Investments Inc.
• A conditional-use permit to allow an automobile repair shop at 7447 Clover Ave. in the M-1 Light Manufacturing District by Corvette Motorsports of Cleveland Inc., NSB Properties LLC and LIKA Properties
The RockCity Sports project would create a 21,000-square-foot indoor recreational facility in a warehouse space at the back of a
144,568-square-foot multitenant building complex.
The applicant proposes three volleyball courts and three pickleball courts.
The hours would be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
Evening hours would consist mostly of youth volleyball training and club teams.
During the day, the facility would be available for open and reserved pickleball play.
“We will also offer programs for ‘team building/ bonding’ activities for corporate outings and youth sports teams,” the applicant said in a letter to the city. “Activities will include various mini games and activities as well as personality testing and group discussions.
Other offerings are to include yoga, kickboxing, karate, self-defense classes and personal training.
During the summer, day camps for youth will be held. Attendees will be able to play volleyball, kickball, baseball, and other sports and games.
Candice Berthold of Synergy Wellness proposes using her space for health coaching and related services, including wellness classes.
The Church in Mentor seeks to occupy an existing church building, previously operated by the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Services would be 10 a.m. Sundays, prayer meetings on
Tuesday evenings, and Bible studies and other small gatherings are planned.
The Church in Wickliffe intends to merge into the Mentor location.
“In short, the applicant hopes to occupy a currently abandoned church structure and become a vibrant part of Mentor’s community while respecting the adjacent, low-density, single-family homes,” said project representative Don Abate.
Corvette Motorsports of Cleveland seeks to relocate from Pine Cone Drive, where it’s been doing business since 2006.
No vehicles are to be stored outside.
The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers at the Municipal Center, 8500 Civic Center Blvd.
