Park District taking names for Amphibian Awakening Call List

- Staff report

The Geauga Park District is giving the public the chance to witness the natural phenomenon of spring breeding behavior of Wood Frogs, Spring Peepers and possibly large salamanders as they move into woodland pools on a warm, rainy night.

Those interested can register their names via www.geaugaparkdistrict.org or 440-286-9516 on the park district’s Amphibian Awakening Call List.

In late March or early April when warm, rainy conditions bring amphibians to breeding pools, naturalists will make the call to hold the program – then organizers will start making calls to everyone registered for the call list.

Frogs will move early in the evening; salamanders, late evening.

Spring Peepers call so loud that their bulging vocal sacs look as though they might burst, and the din can actually leave ears ringing, according to a news release.

Timing of darkness and rain must be just right to see a Spotted or Jefferson salamander in the water, so this sight cannot be anticipated, the release stated.

Those who sign up can expect a call in the late afternoon on the day of the program, and should set out appropriate clothing and flashlights for the visit. Wetland areas utilized that night will feature boardwalk and paved trails with ADA-OK grades for wheelchairs and strollers.

This always-popular, all-ages call list fills up quickly, so it is recommended people get on the call list as soon as possible, the release stated.
