NEWS-HERALD PLAYER OF THE YEAR WATCH LIST

From now through the end of the season, The News-Herald will run a list of semifinali­sts for the high school girls basketball player of the year award. Here are the 10 players who have made the cut for this year’s celebrated award. This year’s player of the year will be announced after the completion of the boys and girls state tournament­s. The presentati­on will be made at a special edition of The Varsity Chalk Talk Show at Hooley House on March 23.

Here is this week’s watch list, in alphabetic­al order.

Abby Carter, North:

Scored 18 points in the Rangers’ sectional final win over South, then scored nine points in the Rangers’ district semifinal win over Mentor. For the season, he junior guard she is averaging 12.6points, 7.2rebounds, 3.5assists and 1.6steals per game. She has also made 49 3-pointers.

Madison Cloonan, Cornerston­e Christian:

Scored 10 points in the Patriots’ sectional final win over St. John. For the season, the senior guard/forward is averaging 13.6points, 7.5rebounds, 3.0assists and 3.0steals per game. She has also made 15 3-pointers.

Michaela Cloonan, Cornerston­e Christian:

Scored 13 points in the Patriots’ sectional final win over St. John. For the season, the senior guard is averaging 11.0points, 6.0 rebounds, 7.1assists and 4.8 steals per game. She has also made 22 3-pointers this season.

Catara DeJarnette, Kenston:

The sophomore guard averaged 16.4points, 4.2rebounds, 3.8 assists, 2.7steals and made 38 3-pointers this season.

Madyson Hacking, Perry:

Scored 10points in the Pirates’ sectional final win over Jefferson. For the season, the junior guard is averaging 13.5points, 5.5rebounds, 3.3assists and 2.5steals per game.

Athena Hocevar, West Geauga:

Scored 31points in the Wolverines’ sectional final win over Harvey. For the season, the junior guard is averaging 15.7points, 5.8rebounds, 2.8assists, 2.8steals and 1.2 blocks per game. She has also made 53 3-pointers.

Destiny Leo, North:

Scored 22points in the Rangers’ sectional final in over South, then scored 21points in the Rangers’ district semifinal win over Mentor. For the season, the senior guard/forward is averaging 24.8points, 7.9rebounds, 2.0steals and 1.8assists per game. She has also made 79 3-pointers.

Carly Perusek, Beaumont:

Scored 11points in the Blue Streaks’ sectional final win over Akron SVSM. For the season, the senior guard is averaging 11.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, 7.1assissts and 3.6steals this season.

Catherine Rock, Mayfield:

The senior guard averaged 15.5 points, 6.2rebound, 5.0assists and 3.5steals per game this season.

Jordan Vencill, Geneva:

The senior forward averaged 18.5 points, 16.2 rebounds, 6.1steals, 2.4blocks and 1.5 assists per game. She has also made nine 3-pointers.
