Area players named all-district

Five area players and three area coaches came home with the highest honors as the Northeast Lakes All-District boys and girls basketball teams were announced on March 2 by district representa­tives from the Ohio Prep Sports Writers Associatio­n.

In boys basketball, Brush’s John Hugley (Division I), Lake Catholic’s Luke Frazier (Division II) and Richmond Heights’ Gbolohan Adio (Division IV) were all named district player of the year in their respective divisions.

Beachwood’s David Krasnow (Division III) and Newbury’s Dave Orms (Division IV) were tapped as coach of the year in their respective divisions.

In girls basketball, North’s Destiny Leo (Division I) and Cornerston­e Christian’s Michaela Cloonan (Division IV) earned player-of-the-year honors in their respective divisions, while Cornerston­e’s Lisa Stopp earned coach-of-the-year in Division IV.

For a closer look at the top recipients:

• Brush’s Hugely, a Pitt signee, posted 23.1 points, 12.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game to lead Brush to a 17-5 record during the regular season and an undefeated run through the Western Reserve Conference.

• Lake Catholic’s Frazier, a Dayton signee, led his team with 22.2 points and 3.9 assists per game, helping Lake Catholic post a 16-6 record and earn the No. 2 seed at the Ashtabula District.

• Richmond Heights’ Adio scored 17.6 points per game alongside making 55 3-pointers and handing out 3.3 assists per game to lead Richmond Heights to an 18-4 record and the top seed at the Norton District.

• Beachwood’s Krasnow took over a Beachwood team that returned no starters and guided the Bison to a 14-8 season. Beachwood finished a game behind Chagrin Falls in the CVC Chagrin standings.

• Newbury’s Orms, tasked with coaching Newbury in the program’s final season following the departure of the previous head coach, stepped up to lead the Black Knights in an emotional campaign. Newbury went 6-16 during the regular season but closed out its home gym with a sectional semifinal victory over Maplewood Feb. 2

• Cornerston­e’s Michaela Cloonan stood out on a team full of stars, averaging 10.8 points, 7.0 assists, 5.7 rebounds and 5.3 steals per game. She also made 25 3-pointers.

• Leo, a Cleveland State signee, heads into a March 3 regional semifinal averaging 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.1 steals per game.

• Stopp led Cornerston­e to a 17-5 regular-season record, with all five losses coming to state-ranked teams — two from Ohio, two from Florida and one from Pennsylvan­ia. The Patriots will play in the Division IV regional tournament later this week against Dalton.
