Scholarships provide solid footing for school year
Dozens of Lake Erie College students have received scholarships through the college’s Power-Up Program as well as a separate Charles Sitwell Scholarship.
A school year upended by remote learning adjustments taken to mitigate the potential spread of the novel coronavirus is coming to a close for Lake Erie College’s spring semester. Despite the current grading period wrapping up, multiple students are now able to begin planning for their futures.
LEC explained that the Power-Up Scholarship Program “enables students to earn scholarships by engaging in activities throughout the school year that align with the Pathway to Empowerment program, a signature program of Lake Erie College.”
Students involved within the Power-Up Program participated in multiple events throughout the 2019-20 school year including career panels, field trips, keynote presentations, internships and more.
Ultimately, 25 students who participated in at least three events per semester, received a $1,000 scholarship for the 2020-21 school year, according to LEC.
Six students have been recognized as going “above and beyond” in terms of their participation with Power-Up Program and have been awarded $2,000. Those recipients include
Shelby Pandy, Scarlet Chesbrough, Lauren Nehoda, Mariah Fedewa, Kirsten Wilson and Maria Kisha.
Also two LEC students were awarded the Charles J. Sitwell Scholarship. The $2,500 scholarship is provided by the Cleveland Foundation “for excellence in internships” and is limited to undergraduates who performed internship work during the 2019-20 school year.
Junior accounting major Susana Chavez Gonzalez completed an internship at Zappitelli Financial Services and senior criminal justice and political science major Johanna Moeller interned at the Washington Internship Institute. Both were ultimately selected as the $2,500 scholarship recipients.
