Milavec Scholarship recipients unveiled
Two Wickliffe seniors are inaugural winners
Two student-athletes at Wickliffe have been named the inaugural winners of the Ray Milavec Memorial Scholarship.
Ana Stjepanovic and Danielle Carroscia will each receive a $1,000 scholarship to further their education in the name of Milavec, a former coach and announcer from Wickliffe who passed away in 2016.
“This is the inaugural one, and we have two winners, which is nice,” said Scott Tennant, an organizer for the Milavec scholarship committee. “We have two extremely worthy recipients for our first year. I think (the outpouring of support) says a lot about Ray’s legacy and the opinion people had of him.”
Stjepanovic was a a four-year varsity soccer player for the Blue Devils, as well as a two-year athlete in basketball and track and field. She will attend Cleveland State to major in dentistry and minor in communications.
Carroscia was a four-year volleyball participant at Wickliffe and a four-year cheerleader. She will attend John Carroll to major in psychology and minor in communications.
The Milavec Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior from Wickliffe who intends to major or minor in communications, public relations or journalism.
“Originally we had intended on giving out one $1,000 award each year,” Tennant said, “but we received two generous donations from members of the Wickliffe Class of 1987 that allowed us to give away an additional $1,000 scholarship this year.”
Milavec’s career in the Wickliffe City Schools spanned four decades as a teacher, athletic director and coach. In 2000, he was named the Ohio Fast Pitch Softball coach of the year. He is a member of the Wickliffe Community Hall of Fame and Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame.
His announcing career was vast and iconic.
In addition to Wickliffe sports, Milavec was the Cavaliers’ PA announcer from 1978-83. He was also announcer for The NewsHerald Senior Bowl football game and News-Herald Senior Classic for boys and girls basketball. He also announced for the Captains for a number of years.
He was also a longtime co-host on the “Mondays with Malta” radio show on WINT-AM 1330 with Charlie Malta.
