If you were feeling a little shabby during this the pandemic, you no longer have to wait for a haircut. May 15 marked the reopening of Ohio’s barbershops and hair salons, along with nail salons, day spas and tanning facilities.

Spensir Chappell and Marco Conti, co-owners of Marky Fresh barbershop at 7470 Tyler Blvd. in Mentor, were ecstatic to open their doors and welcome in customers. Seeing familiar faces and the response from the community has been a highlight. They have already had a surge in clients.

“Today, being able to service our clients means a lot to all of us here,” Chappell said.

“Being closed for so long has affected the staff and all the team members here at

Marky Fresh.

“We’re very grateful to be open, despite everything.”

With the tight restrictions, many barbers and stylists were out of work and left with few options. Reopening allows some normalcy.

“It’s about helping people feel better about themselves by getting a hair cut and lifting their spirits, and that means job security for the barbers,” Chappell said.

For many customers, this is a sigh of relief, customers like Erik Marsch of Eastlake says, “Reopening means getting back to some sort of normalcy. I’m excited to get out and have interaction with people without social distancing.”

As at other salons, the staff at Marky Fresh is focused on keeping everything cleaned and sanitized for their customers. They have implemented new rules regarding sanitation to help stop the spread of coronavirus. The staff is taking every precaution for the safety of the barbers and clients.

“We’ve implemented new rules for sanitation that are compliant with the state board and will continue to go above and beyond the expectations for the safety and health of our clients,” Chappell said.

The staff at Marky Fresh plans to keep moving forward and is already filled with bookings since the reopening was announced.

The support they have received is what keeps them going and fuels their drive to serve their customers better, Chappell says.

“Everyone that has walked through the door today is more than excited, we’ve booked clients for about three weeks out now, and there has been overwhelming support from all of our clients.”
