Court job fair aims to connect probationers with employers
Willoughby Municipal Court Judge Marisa L. Cornachio recently announced a new job program for probationers to help find resources and employment opportunities.
Cornachio and Probation Chief Mark Shannon enlisted the help of several local employers to initiate a new jobs program at the court that included the court’s first Job Fair held on June 12. They invited local employers to interview individuals on probation to the court.
Probationers came prepared for the interview complete with proper dress and resume in tow. Astro Manufacturing, NESCO Resources, Express Employment Professionals and Ohio Means Jobs were among those who participated.
“The goal is to reduce the rate of recidivism,” Cornachio said. “A condition of probation is to obtain gainful employment, and this can be difficult for someone with a criminal record.”
“This program helps clients continue to be productive members of society and allows Willoughby Municipal Court to create strong and positive relationships with employers in the community,” Shannon said.
“It is important to make it clear that there are consequences for individuals who engage in criminal conduct; however, punishment is one component of the probation process,” Cornachio said. “A successful probation program will provide tools and resources to individuals so that they will stop the conduct that led them to court in the first place.”
Express Employment Professionals owner Jim Levin said that in a couple of hours they were able to meet with several job seekers who have qualifications the company is looking for.
“All were prepared and respectful and excited about the opportunity,” Levin said.
“We look forward to participating in the future, helping the courts get probationers back to work.”
Cornachio said that when people are working a steady job, they can discover meaning and purpose in their life.
“They have a reason to get up each day and be a productive member of society,” she said. “The overall effect is decreased criminal conduct within our community and increased safety for our citizens.”
The next Willoughby Municipal Court Job Fair is scheduled for Aug. 7.
