Tow truck driver among two killed in crash

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigat­ing a crash that left two dead late July 21 on the Ohio Turnpike.

Eric Ackerman, 44, of Sandusky and the driver of a disabled vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene, according to a news release from OHP.

At 11:23 p.m., troopers from the Milan Post responded to a multiple vehicle fatal crash on the Ohio Turnpike near the 132 milepost eastbound in Henrietta Township.

Troopers determined that a wrecker from Interstate Towing of Norwalk was assisting a disabled vehicle on the right shoulder when it was struck by an eastbound 2009 Chevrolet 2500 pickup truck, according to the release.

Sea-Doo personal watercraft from the trailer of the disabled vehicle onto the wrecker when they were struck by the pickup that ran off the road, the release said.

The pickup truck became airborne and landed on its top in the right lane.

The wrecker driver was wearing a reflective vest at the time of the crash and the wrecker had its overhead emergency lights activated, the release said.

Ackerman, the driver of the wrecker, and the driver of the disabled vehicle were pronounced deceased at the scene, according to the release.

The identity of the driver of the disabled vehicle will be released once next of kin notificati­on has been made.

The 30-year-old driver of the pickup truck, who is a Bellevue man, was transporte­d to Mercy Health – Lorain Hospital by ambulance, according to the release.
