Village’s annual parade to go on with some changes

- By Alexis Oatman aoatman@news-herald.com

Life for everyone has changed due to the pandemic. Parades everywhere have been canceled — St. Patrick’s Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July. But the Village of Timberlake has found a way to still celebrate with its Family Day Parade.

The Aug. 2 parade will start at 1 p.m. on East Shore Boulevard, winding through the village to end at Village Hall.

Anyone can participate as long as they are in a vehicle. Residents can be in a car, boat, golf cart, or even a riding lawnmower. Bikes are not allowed.

This annual event is sponsored by the Timberlake Village Club and usually includes a potluck for residents and families to enjoy. However, amid coronavirus concerns, there will be no potluck.

The Village Club is a group of dedicated volunteers in Timberlake that holds community events and give back to the village through service. A group of residents started the Village Club to bring the community together by hosting annual events, including Easter egg hunt, Browns tailgate picnics, beach clean-ups, bonfires, Christmas parties, clambakes and more.

One of the founders of the Village Club, Ron Mona, is still volunteering to keep the traditions alive with a dedicated group of volunteers. Krista Kanuch, the current Village Club president, organizes the events and volunteers.

Timberlake Councilwoman Sherri Falkenberg has been involved with the process and is excited to see the turn out for the annual parade this year.

“I’m excited that this event will still take place. The children and residents need some jointly right now.

Several of the residents will participate in the parade along with a local non-profit, Heroes United, which will bring superheroes, electric scooters, and even a real Batmobile.”

“The parade that usually just runs down East Shore will cover the entire Village of Timberlake for all to enjoy. Giving residents the opportunity to invite family and friends to social distance and stay in their own yards to enjoy.”

After the parade, villagers can gather for their own family picnic.

“Even though this year’s event will look quite different, we are all happy that it was not completely canceled. It has become a summertime tradition to gather after the parade on the grounds of the village hall and enjoy music, food, and all things summer,” Falkenberg said..
