Lake Humane Society seizes dog with heatstroke
Agency seeks help with medical care, recovery costs for pit bull-terrier
Lake Humane Society is seeking help covering the costs of medical treatment for a dog discovered chained up in the heat without food, shade or water.
A video shared on social media Aug. 9 alerted the agency to the pit bull-terrier mix at a Lake County residence.
“Penny” struggled to stand up and her breathing was extremely labored, according to a news release. Lake Humane conducted a full investigation in partnership with the Painesville Police Department.
The dog was impounded Aug. 10 and ultimately surrendered through the court system.
“It is an ongoing investigation and we are working with our prosecutor to determine the charges that will be filed,” said Lake Humane spokeswoman Lori Caszatt.
Penny is weak, underweight and doing her best to adjust to her new surroundings, she said. The dog’s back legs gave out
Aug. 11, causing her to collapse.
Upon further examination, it was determined that she is suffering from heatstroke resulting in extreme dehydration. Lab work revealed kidney and liver problems, which medical staff believe stem from the heat exposure. In a few weeks, Penny’s lab work will be checked to re-evaluate her condition and determine the cause.
Radiographs are needed so medical staff can figure out the best course of treatment, the release states.
“Penny is just 1 year old and still has so much life to live,” Caszatt said. “She loves belly rubs and spending time with people who care.”
She is receiving antibiotics, a special kidney diet and liver medications. Staff has made sure she is resting comfortably, and everyone is lavishing her with food and love, she said. To donate toward Penny’s treatment and recovery, visit the Angel Fund donation page at lakehumane.org.
