Library issues policies as schools reopen

- Staff report

Fairport Harbor Public Library has announced some changes to its procedures regarding use of and access to the library building which will impact families of students that are accustomed to visiting the library after school to study, use the computers, socialize with friends, and await rides home.

Children in prekindergarten through fifth grade must be accompanied by an adult caregiver when coming into the library, according to a news release.

Those in sixth through eighth grades may visit without a guardian but must have a permission slip during each visit. The permission slip is available at the door or printable from the library website.

High school students may visit on their own but are expected to follow all library behavior policies.

Patrons of all ages are limited to visiting the library to one hour a day. The library stated that it is currently allowing only 10 people at a time within the building.

To adhere to social distancing regulations, public computer use and seating are very limited, the release stated. Patrons and students are asked to make their library visits quick and brief.

“We strongly encourage all library users to browse the computer catalog and place holds in advance of their visit and to take advantage of our free eMedia and online research resources,” the library stated.

Currently, the library’s open hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays; and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on

Tuesdays and Thursday.

The library is closed on weekends.

“It’s been a mystifying year, but we at the library are as committed as ever to our service to the schools and the community,” the library stated.

“We always look forward to seeing your kids in the library and are disappointed that we have to limit their visits due to this public health crisis.”

The library is located at 335 Vine St. and can be reached at 440-354-8191 or www.fairportlibrary.com.
